Niedersachsen - an industrial location with a great future

Niedersachsen is the second-largest German federal state with the fourth-largest population (around eight million). By reason of its central geographical location in the heart of the European Union and its excellent transport connections it has evolved into a central hub, linking northern and southern, eastern and western Europe, making it the perfect location to from which to reach markets, customers and suppliers within the EU and beyond into eastern Europe.
Niedersachsen is home to almost every sector of industry and commerce, and the state’s economy leads in several: along with major global players such as Volkswagen, Continental, TUI, Airbus, Salzgitter Stahl and Meyer Werft in Papenburg, and large food industry concerns such as AGRAVIS Raiffeisen AG, NORDMILCH eG, heristo Gruppe and PHW Gruppe, the state has a multitude of internationally successful small and medium-sized enterprises, which in Niedersachsen generate almost half the entire economic product in the sectors trade, craft trades, industry, manufacturing and services. Seventy per cent of the workforce are employed in medium-sized enterprises.

CeBIT and HANNOVER MESSE make the state capital, Hannover, one of the world’s largest and most important trade fair locations. With the internationally pre-eminent Exhibition Grounds, Hannover and Niedersachsen offer an excellent venue for business and international cooperation.

On the road, by rail and waterway, Niedersachsen has an exceptionally good transport infrastructure. Hannover is at the crossroads of international highways from Scandinavia to Italy, from Amsterdam, Paris and London via Berlin and Warsaw to Moscow. Within five hours, heavy goods vehicles from Niedersachsen can reach around 90 million EU citizens. With nine seaports (Brake, Cuxhaven, Emden, Leer, Nordenham, Papenburg, Oldenburg, Stade and Wilhelmshaven) and its neighbours in Bremen, Bremerhaven and Hamburg, Niedersachsen has a concentration of maritime facilities unique in Europe, linked with inland transport hubs via harbours and transfer facilities along the inland waterways. From August 2012 the JadeWeserPort (JWP) at Wilhelmshaven will start operations: the latest generation of container ships (carrying more than 14,000 intermodal containers) will be handled without waiting at this new port, the only one of its kind in northern Europe apart from Rotterdam to operate independently of the tides. JWP will set the standard for the future of German freight shipping and, as a European transport hub, offer international investors optimum accessibility and access to European and Scandinavian markets, Eastern Europe and Russia.
