„Happy Birthday” 10th Niedersachsen Foreign Trade Day 2013!

On 9 April 2013, the Niedersachsen Foreign Trade Day celebrated its 10th anniversary. The main topic of this year’s conference was the implementation of energy policy in Europe and the related business opportunities in the Benelux countries.

As usual, Niedersachsen's largest foreign trade event, well-attended again this year, was dedicated to a region that is of special interest to small and medium-sized enterprises and their international activities: the Benelux countries.
Luxemburg
Georges Santer, Ambassador of Luxemburg, reported on the energy policy in the Grand Duchy which is closely linked to the energy policy of the European Union. The integration in the European energy market is a key priority for the small, import-dependent country. In addition, Luxemburg puts strong emphasis on renewable energies and the promotion of energy efficiency.
Pierre Gramegna from the Chamber of Commerce of Luxemburg talked about energy in supply chain management. As a natural hub for large international logistics streams, Luxemburg can make an essential contribution to an energy-optimized use of existing infrastructures.
Netherlands
„If there is any policy that is truly transnational, it is the energy policy,” said Marnix Krop, Ambassador of the Netherlands. His country is the largest natural gas producer in the EU and tightly integrated with the energy markets of its neighbours. Recently, an even closer cooperation was agreed upon with Germany, especially in the fields of supply security, infrastructure harmonization and renewable energies.
Heinrich Ahlers, Managing Director of Buss Port Logistics, shared the experience his company has made when they built the Orange Blue Terminal in Eemshaven in the Netherlands. The extremely short building time of just 2.5 years had only been possible because Buss got a lot of support from the Dutch authorities who made decisions much faster than German authorities typically would, he said.
Energy policy in the EU
Günther Oettinger, EU Commissioner for Energy, connected the dots from the foundation of the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC) in 1951 to the current challenges of modern energy policy.
Founded just six years after the end of the war by the Benelux countries, France, Italy and Germany, the ECSC paved the way for what is today the largest domestic market in the world. Without this single European market, the German economy would clearly have been less successful, Oettinger said.
Energy policy plays an important role, because the energy cost is today what the labour cost used to be in former decades. An intelligent energy strategy is needed on the European level to make sure that these cost can be kept under control and to guarantee open and fair competition on the energy markets. “We need intelligent, cooperative, cross-border solutions,” said Commissioner Oettinger in conclusion.
Belgium
Belgium’s ambassador Renier Nijskens explained the ambitious targets which his countries has defined for its energy policy: Until 2050, Belgium plans to cover its entire energy demand with renewable energies and, at the same time, to ensure security of supply just as well as reasonable energy prices. A gradual phase-out of nuclear energy, more wind parks in the North Sea, reduction of fossil fuels and promotion of renewable energies are the pillars of the Belgian energy policy.
Bart Bode, Head of the Organisation for Sustainable Energies (ODE) in Flanders, is convinced that all EU countries can cover their entire energy demands from renewable energies. “The answer is blowing in the wind,” he said poetically – and in photovoltaics, solar heat and bioenergy.
4th Niedersachsen Foreign Trade Prize
One highlight of this event was the award ceremony of the 4th Niedersachsen Foreign Trade Prize. The Foreign Trade Prize highlights and acknowledges exceptional achievements of Niedersachsen companies that succeeded in establishing themselves on foreign markets and perform strongly in the face of international competition. Olaf Lies, Niedersachsen’s Minister for Economics, Labour and Transport, granted the award to Hytera Mobilfunk in the category “SMEs” and to Broetje-Automation in the category “large companies”.

Niedersachsen Foreign Trade Day at HANNOVER MESSE

Philipp Rösler, Federal Minister of Economics, opened the 9th Niedersachsen Foreign Trade Day on 24 April 2012, which focused on the economic relations with the ASEAN region.

Established in 2004 as an international business forum, the Foreign Trade Day offers countries a platform to present their economic strengths to stakeholders and decision-makers from the worlds of business, research and politics. Traditionally, the event takes place on the second day of HANNOVER MESSE. This year, it was attended by some 270 participants.
In his opening speech, Minister Rösler summarized the economic relations between Germany and the ASEAN member states. The federal government will continue to encourage German companies to engage in this region, he said, and strengthen the partnership with ASEAN through bilateral agreements and political attention.
H. E. Dr. Widhya Chem, Ambassador of Cambodia and ASEAN Chair 2012, shared interesting key facts about ASEAN with the audience. The Association of Southeast Asian Nations was founded by Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand in 1967. Since then, the organization, which includes ten member countries now, has developed into a successful economic association with a combined GDP of some 1.5 trillion US dollars and a population of approximately 600 million people. Taking the European Union as a role model, the organization strives to establish the ASEAN Economic Community, a single market with a common political vision, by 2015.
At the Foreign Trade Day, high-ranking German and Asian speakers gave their views on the political and economic situation in selected ASEAN countries. They presented business opportunities for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and discussed the exponentially increasing importance of the region in the context of global trading relations.
Unanimously, the experts emphasized the fact that the ASEAN states represent a very attractive market for German exports and investments – and that the region has long since outgrown its role as an “extended workbench” for European companies.
One highlight of this event was the award ceremony of the 3rd Niedersachsen Foreign Trade Prize. The Foreign Trade Prize highlights and acknowledges exceptional achievements of Niedersachsen companies that succeeded in establishing themselves on foreign markets and perform strongly in the face of international competition. Jörg Bode, Niedersachsen’s Minister for Economics, Labour and Transport, granted the award to industrial plant manufacturer “Purplan” and, in a special category for large companies, to “Hugo Vogelsang Maschinenbau GmbH”.

Photo:
Rösler at the 9th Niedersachsen Foreign Trade Day © Michael Siebert
